Going on a sailboat trip from Vancouver to Alaska

(Comments in red are made after returning from the trip)

Page 2  -  Provisioning for the trip
I have no experience going on a long trip like this and do not know anyone who has actually sailed from Vancouver to Alaska.    What I know is that for 75% of the trip, there's not going to be a store for shopping.  We also need to have food for contingencies. So, I come up with this provision list.
- 24 cans of 500 ml evaporated milk
 (very useful - for coffee, tea, and making cream sauce and dessert flan.  - used one can every 3-4 days)
-   5 cans of 500 ml spinach
-   5 cans of 500 ml asparagus
-   5 cans of 500 ml green peas 
-   5 cans of 500 ml diced tomatoes  
(all gone)
-   5 cans of 250 ml tomato paste
-   2 cartons of 500 ml Minute Rice
-   5 pkgs of cold meat 
(all gone)
-   5 jars of Mixed Nuts 
(all gone - had to buy more)
-   2 pkgs of sausage meat 
(all gone)
-   2 cans of Camembert Cheese
(gone - used for celebrating milestones)
-   6 boxes of assorted crackers
(used for snacks and lunch)
-   12 bags of Mr. Noodles
(all gone)
-  60 cans of assorted pop and beer 
(all gone)
-  12  1-litre containers of Assorted fruit juice 
(all gone)
-   4 jars of Kraft Salad dressings 
(all gone)
-   6 jars of assorted condiments - peanut butter, mustard, ketchup, vinegar, etc.
-   6 pounds of coffee
 (all gone)
-   6 different types of tea 
(all gone)
-   6 different types of packaged cookies

Fresh food
6 potatoes 
(all gone)
1 head green cabbage
(lasted two weeks, devised many different variations of using cabbage, stir-fried, salad, soup....)
1 head red cabbage (

3 pcs red pepper

6 bagels
(all gone)
1 loaf of raisin bread

3 packs of meat

Port McNeil and Prince Rupert have good supermarkets and we were able to replenish with fresh food and vegies.  In Ketchikan, one apple costs $2.50, but a block of cheese costs only $2.00 and a 5.5 litre of good Merlot wine costs $19.00 - you win some - lose some)

When we got to Refuge Cove on the last week, they only have one loaf of English Muffin left, and Skylark bought the last one. So we had oatmeal for breakfast the next few mornings and crackers and cold meat for lunch)


We plan to stop at a marina for provisions every 4 to 5 days for some fresh food, fuel and water.   Our fuel tank can only last us 3-4 days, and our water around 5 days, assuming we take a boat shower every 2 days.

Talk about fuel tank, we planned to stop at Namu for fuel, but found out that fuel is available only after 3 pm.  So we proceeded to Ocean Falls, but found out that the fuel stand is only open on Mondays and Thursdays.  The next stop is Shearwater, and just as we were approaching Shearwater, our engine quit - we run out of gas.  We took out our  5- gallon jug reserve and filled up the tank and proceeded to the fuel dock.

The next incident was at Thorne Bay, Alaska.  We travelled from New Metlakatla to Thorne Bay for the night, and next morning, we went to the fuel dock and was told that a guy had just come in 5 minutes before us and purchased the remaining 6 gallons.  They are OUT OF GAS.  We still had about 20 litres in our tank and made it to Ketchikan without incident. 

Immediately, we bought another empty jerry can to carry an additional 20 litre reserve.  All in all, we now have two jerry cans totalling 40 litre reserve.

We did okay.  I gained 10 pounds.
